mumble/teamspeak

Has anyone had any luck moving their group over to teamspeak or mumble? My group and I are very much gen Z, and a lot of my friends are console players who have started playing on PC. It kinda makes sense that they would want to use discord because it's much easier to use, but I'm getting really fed up with discord and it's absolutely garbage electron client taking up half a gigabyte of RAM at any one point.

We already use a public teamspeak 3 server when the discord servers are down (which isn't really an infrequent occurrence).

What do you guys think? Has anyone successfully moved their group back to traditional VOIP?

PS: Honorary RIP to vent. I like to rewatch the ventrilo harassment videos once a year.

Also Ventrilo still lives, sure it's not as popular... You aren't going to find people to talk in there most of the times, but it still works... I use Ventrilo on my Windows 98 and it just works... Windows 10 and 11? I mean you can install it, but is it necessary?

TeamSpeak works very good on Linux and even Mac, I just don't know what the @userwUsername: user is talking about... People that says TeamSpeak is bad doesn't even say the reason why, most of the times they are complaining about UI, which can be changed and again there's nothing wrong with it... People can say UI is ugly, but the end of the day is, does it work? Discord people was always aggressive like that and it's very well documented why Discord changes people's perspective to only adopt their app and use no other, It's this toxic community people should stay away but instead give more power to them...

Used TS3 extensively between 2014 and 2019. Then used Discord until 2024 when I finally gave up upon it as a all-in one solution. It's voice and video quality is trash without nitro.

The servers are just big rooms connected to a master server which God knows where it sends your information. Customizability is a downgrade from TS too. In 2021-2022 Discord banned custom Music bots and custom themes can now lead to locking your account.

You're right about the monopoly thing. It's more convenient for those who can't be bothered spinning up a server themselves.

It really sucks though because Discord is so terribly made. Seeing the client alone use 500+ MB of ram is insane - the gaming consoles that I grew up playing would have had around 64MB. It's shocking work.

TeamSpeak is interesting and I used both TS2 and TS3(TS3 being much better), but unfortunately not that many people are willing to move onto anything that's not Discord.

The platform has become a large monopoly, most of my friends excuses are that it doesn't work on Linux or requires some fiddling around but also sometime say "TeamSpeak just sounds bad" and "Typing sucks on there."

It depends on people, either they're willing to move on from the platform, or aren't even gonna budge.
