RŌBLOX is an MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) aimed at a demographic of children and teenagers between eight and eighteen. It is a sandbox environment where players can create their own virtual worlds with different scenarios or games. Other players can join and play the designs. The game is mainly browser-based, but it requires a separate installer for PC platforms to play or edit, while the mobile versions integrate everything into a single app but do not provide access to the editor.

The game contains two types of currencies: tickets and Robux. Tickets are the most common currency, and these are earned by participating in activities. Robux is the premium currency used to extensively customize avatars and buy and sell items. Players can design new items and trade or sell them. It is also possible to implement small fees for games, requiring players to pay to participate. Many commercial actions to earn money require a premium subscription to become a member of the Builders Club, which offers different types of subscriptions with monthly fees.
