i would say 15 75hz XGA monitor with DVI 1024x768 is your best monitor option

My NVIDIA 7800 GTX is really hot (both literally and figuratively) but I've heard some of the 7xxx and 8xxx GPUs have some defects
An NVIDIA GPU like this is fun if you're willing to take the risk, but a Radeon HD 48xx might be a fun safe GPU

A 17 inch monitor would be best for a vista setup as using a crt for vista isnt.. that great.
