Retired Military Laptop Turned Windows XP Gaming Powerhouse

Perhaps the best thousand dollars I've ever spent on retro gaming arrived in my mail last week.

If you're not familiar with the Dell Latitude E6420 XFR, I wouldn't blame you. It wasn't made with consumers in mind. Released in 2013, these laptops were designed for military use and many very likely saw action in the Iraq and Afghan Wars, along with other military operations conducted by US armed forces around the world.

These laptops are extremely tanky by design. They were completely redesigned from the consumer model with one notable (and welcome) change being the XFR model removed all forms of consumer grade plastics and rubber (which by 2025, is usually universally melted, very sticky, and hard to polish away).

Another change comes in the form of every port being sealed and lockable with a thick hatch. These laptops are essentially water proof, humidity proof, and fire resistant. If you look up some pictures, you'll see I'm being dead serious. Something I failed to mention at this up to this point is that these laptops are definitely the base models used for the Call of Duty games for their airstrike and drone perks. I can't emphasize enough how badass these laptops look. It makes RGB accents look like sissyware.

The Dell community nicknamed this laptop "The Hot Potato" for reasons that I'll get into later. Despite the nickname, it's really well loved and a bit of a collector's item. I think one of the main reasons for this is how incredibly easy DIY repairs are for this thing. There are 24 standard screws keeping the bottom plate in place. Removing those screws and removing that panel gives you access to every single vital component. And, minus the GPU, everything is replaceable - the CPU, memory, WIFI card, the monitor - everything. You don't even need a spudger tool to pry anything. A total novice could replace every single component (again, minus the GPU) in well under an hour. I wish every laptop was designed this durable and this repairable. I feel very fortunate that THIS is the laptop that Dell decided to militarize.

My XFR is stylized in a forest green, but others can come in black, blue, red, or silver and they all just look plain cool.

It weighs about ten pounds and features a built-in thick rubber handle that also serves very nicely as a palm rest.

I think the most surprising thing of all is that I can game pretty competently on the system without a mouse! I was smoking suckers on Battlefield 2 left and right. The trackpad is responsive and the left and right click buttons are made of the same dense rubber that the handle is. Again, not melted or sticky. Whatever rubber the military requested for these laptops stands the test of time!

Officially, the last laptops with XP drivers and that were intended for gaming came out circa 2009. This makes the 2013 XFR somewhat of an oddity. If you consider the fact that the military used (and uses) decades old technology alongside the state of the art, then it makes perfect sense as to why this laptop has XP drivers. In fact, I'm sure some are still in use to this very day. They've certainly kept their price tags up over 12 years!

The Dell E6420 XFR that I'm typing this blog on right now features the capable dual core, quad threaded i7-2640M running at 2.8 GHz, the 512MB Nvidia NVS 4200M, and very much an overabundance of memory - 16GBs of DDR3 memory running at 1600MHz. Only 3.3 gigs are usable on my XP install, so there's that.

It's got a 1366x768 display. The image is very sharp for it's low resolution and the screen can get blindingly bright. This is one of the clearest signs that this laptop was intended for outdoor use if you ignore it's exterior design.

I'm sporting a 2 TB m.2 SATA SSD from Orico in a 3D printed XFR drive caddy that converts the m.2 interface into a standard SATA III interface that the laptop likes (in ATA mode via the BIOS). The system boots and makes it to desktop in about 10 seconds, including RollBack RX which slows down that boot time in exchange for having an excellent system restore function that can exist outside of Windows.

Lastly, through the ExpressCard slot, I've upgraded the laptop audio capabilities by plugging in a SoundBlaster X-FI sound card. All of a sudden I can max out audio hardware acceleration, EAX functionality, and general 3D audio on every single 9x and XP game in existence. I plan to take full advantage of this with a wired audio haptic vest and a wired Audio-Technica ATH-M30x all together in a y-split plug in for the X-FI card. And yes, I DO take my gaming this seriously!

I had to make some modifications to the laptop, because it was very clearly having overheating issues. Idle temps would be in the 70s and 80s. I discovered that, despite the laptop being completely clean and well taken careful of, the cause of heat buildup was in none other than a poor heatsink design. The heatsink only made contact with the CPU. It didn't have any contact pressure for the Nvidia chip or the CPU controller. I purchase a set of smoothed down pure copper pennies and padded both sides with IC thermal graphite pads. This made a perfect contact for both of these dyes. After that, my idle temps range anywhere from the low 50s to the low 60s. Gaming usually has temps ranging in the upper 70s to lower 80s. The heatsink fan (the only fan in this whole system) begins to kick on if in the mid 80s and goes full speed if temps reach and remain around 93 degrees. Toasty!

The consumer model is well known for being a portable heater. It usually sports a single copper pipe that's supposed to transfer the heat away from three different components. It really doesn't have that ability. This XFR model comes with a dual lane pipe and it's better at doing this kind of job, but certainly not a perfect system either.

So far, the most intense games I've run on this laptop have been Hellgate London and Battlefield 2142, but I'll be getting up to circa 2010 games.

What I've discovered is that everything through to Directx 8.1 can be maxed out on all settings. When it comes to Directx 9 games, it's a little different. Games can be maxed out in everything, but anti aliasing has to be set to zero. This doesn't impact the graphic fidelity of games running at 1024x768, which is perfect for this era. By setting a fixed aspect ratio in the Nvidia settings, I get black borders instead of a stretched out image of whatever retro game I'm playing. This gives a performance boost, while also being the ideal resolution of all late 90s and early 2000s games. I just love it. Everything looks and runs brilliantly on this.

I paid $800 for my laptop and $200 on the SSD kit. I know this is the last piece of Windows retro hardware that I'll ever need to buy. I'll be taking this system with me to the Philippines and it's going to be my main gaming rig for at least a year over there. However, I'm sure I'm going to find any excuse I can to bring this bad boy out.

I spent over 5 years looking for the perfect Windows XP gaming laptop. From the durability, ease of repairability, the performance capabilities, hardware features, and overall aesthetics of this laptop, I KNOW my search is over.

This is the ultimate retro gaming laptop, capable of playing damn near everything.

And now you know my secret weapon. It was just too good to keep for myself. Especially since this laptop is definitely going to outlive me.

Hot damn, that's a gorgeous bit of gear! I'd definitely seen pictures of the military model floating around, but I guess I assumed it was something only available to/through military contractors. Now that I know it's possible to own one, I kinda want to see if I can manage to scrounge for one myself someday!



Especially after hearing about how easy it is to sling the parts around. Also, using the pennies how you did was a pretty slick move.
