The game was in some aspects outdated which lead to the creation of what was then called Rust Experimental, which became the current version of the game. Even after creating Rust Experimental in 2014, the developers left the option to go back to Legacy by selecting either version in the steam game menu. However, the game was no longer receiving regular updates as the developers were primarily focused on improving the newer version of Rust. Initially, some players were satisfied with the choice to continue playing Legacy because the new version of the game would not run well on some computers, and some players preferred the simplicity of the original version of the game. Rust Legacy was eventually removed from Steam in Devblog 139 on 8th December 2016, citing lack of player popularity. Because the game was hosted externally this meant that players could no longer play the game officially after it was removed.
